Awareness on violence against women

JOWAI: The Seng Kynthei Unitarian Union Northeast India organised an awareness programme on the theme ‘Elimination of violence against women and children’ and ‘Child protection with reference to POCSO and JJ Act’ recently at Latyrke community hall, Saipung in East Jaintia Hills.
The event also coincides with the international celebration of the White Ribbon Campaign. An introductory speech on the campaign was given by Elgiva Dora Shullai. This was followed by the White Ribbon Pledge taken by the attendees.
Rev HH Mohrmen, minister of the Unitarian Union Northeast India (UUNEI) delivered the keynote address stressing on the importance of reporting cases of violence against women and children and not to take the law in our own hands.
Dr C Nongbri, Head of Dept of Education, NEHU spoke on citizen’s duty to curb and eliminate violence against women and the importance of grooming gender equity.
Teibor Kyndiah, District Child Protection Officer emphasized on the Prevention of Children from Sexual offences (POCSO Act) and Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act.
The function was attended by the headmen, leaders and secretaries of the villages under Saipung Block along with members of UUNEI.
The event was organised in collaboration with District Child Protection Unit, Khliehriat and the BDO of Saipung Community and Rural Development Block.
