GUWAHATI: Five persons died while over 40 sustained injuries when a truck carrying them, lost control and fell into a roadside ditch in the Zirikinding area of West Karbi Anglong on Sunday evening.
Among the injured who were admitted to Diphu Civil Hospital, six severely hurt passengers were referred to Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), sources said on Monday.
The passengers were reportedly returning from a pre-Christmas celebration.
Chief executive member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang along with a delegation from the council visited Diphu Civil Hospital on Monday and enquired about the condition of the injured currently undergoing treatment, sources said.
Speaking to reporters, the KAAC chief executive member said that the council has made arrangements for all the injured. “Forty two of the injured have been admitted to Diphu Civil Hospital. The requisite medicine and blankets have been provided to them by the council,” he said.
The council authorities instructed the hospital authorities to arrange free treatment for the injured.
Ronghang, who also apprised health minister, Pijush Hazarika about the incident, further instructed the health department officials to arrange ambulances to take the six seriously injured passengers who were referred to GMCH.
“We are being told that the driver of the truck might have been under the influence of alcohol,” he said.
