CBI carries out search at Cachar Paper Mill
SHILLONG: The CBI has carried out a search at the defunct Cachar Paper Mill of the Hindustan Paper Corporation on Monday and found wasteful expenditure. Sources said the search revealed that those who manned the Mill did not sell huge quantity of finished products (over 1,000 tonnes worth Rs 5.50 crore) at the time of closure in 2015. Similarly, after the closure, 50,000 metric tonnes of bamboo were not utilised. Moreover, 1,000 metric tonnes of coal brought from Garo Hills, Assam and other places were also not used. The search will continue on Tuesday.
IOC invites locals to set up petrol pumps
SHILLONG: The Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has appealed to residents from the state to come forward for setting up petrol pumps in view of the low response so far. Addressing the press on Monday, IOCL assistant manager Aloke Marandi said there is a need for 247 petrol pumps in the state. According to him, the expansion of retail outlet network is expected to generate employment opportunities as in a petrol pump, there will be a manager and 5-6 customer agents. He added that the process of dealer selection has been simplified in line with the government’s emphasis on “ease of doing business”. User friendly on-line application has been introduced. Only the selected candidate would be required to produce the documents. Similarly, the eligibility norms have also been relaxed. Oil marketing companies have issued advertisements inviting applications from prospective candidates for setting up of petrol pumps. The last date to apply is December 24. All retail outlets will be constructed with latest technology automation. For the first time, computerised “draw of lots”/bid opening would be held under the aegis of an independent agency to bring in more transparency. First Khasi film fest in city
SHILLONG: A Khasi Film Festival will be held for the first time in the state at St. Paul’s Higher Secondary School, Marbisu on Wednesday and Thursday. Addressing the press, spokesperson of Lum Jingshai Choir, Marbisu, Wealthy Bornfield Sunn said the festival aims to promote films made by the nascent Khasi and Jaintia film industry and movie buffs will get a treat of their favourite films. Films such as Dak Bangla, Papa, Haban Tony, Thong Iong Nga will be screened on Wednesday which will be followed by U Tirot, Iung U Shlek, Onaatah and Hep on Thursday. The festival is held to commemorate the silver jubilee celebration of Lum Jingshai Choir, Marbisu. Tickets are available for Rs 500 (Platinum), Rs 50 (Gold) and Rs 20 (Silver).
Workshop on traditional musical instruments held in Tura
TURA: A workshop on traditional musical instruments organised by the A’chik Literature Society (ALS) was held recently at the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School premises in Tura. The six-day workshop was sponsored by the GHADC and D J Publications.The closing function included performances by the trainees on various traditional instruments and dances as well as a song accompanied by Chigring and Serenda by the instructors.
Dokua winter fest held in NGH
SHILLONG: The ‘Dokua Mini Winter Festival cum Youth Fest’ organised by the Baghabatta Centre Development Council (BCDC) was held in North Garo Hills on Saturday. North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ramkumar S attended the event as the chief guest along with former Kharkutta MLA CW Momin and BK Sangma, RO Planning, Resubelpara. The festival concluded with a vote of thanks to all sponsors including former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and former MLA CW Momin.
Theatre fest in NEHU
Shillong: The Department of English, NEHU and NIT Meghalaya will organise the first ever NEHU NIT: Under the Pine Tree Theatre Festival in collaboration with NSD, New Delhi from December 13 to 15 at the NEHU Old Guest House. Three theatre groups from Rourkela, Mumbai and New Delhi will perform plays based on the literary works of O Henry, Saadat Hasan Manto and Premchand. All plays will be in Hindi and timings are 3:30 pm on Thursday and Friday and 2 pm on Saturday. Meanwhile, festival coordinator Jyotirmoy Prodhani, Dept. of English, NEHU has also informed that there will be no entry fee.
Unclaimed body
SHILLONG: The Joint Director of Health Services (SS), Civil Hospital, Shillong has informed that Phasterlin Mawlieh (32), son of Twin Mawlieh and resident of Umlyngka was admitted at the hospital on November 17 and passed away on Sunday. Relatives of the deceased are requested to collect the dead body from the hospital morgue within three days failing which the body will be sent for disposal by the Shillong Municipal Board.
