SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, while criticising the opposition, said on Monday that the state government had ignored the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in the past years.
Speaking to reporters at Assam Rifles Headquarters in Laitkor, the chief minister said the NCC should have received attention and “assured the cadets that the present government will extend support to NCC with priorities to resolve the basic infrastructure, movement and running expenditure”.
“We as a government feel that government can contribute a lot. We have had a meeting about two months back and already the engagements and discussion started with the Youth Affairs and Education departments,” he added.
Sangma addressed 450 cadets from various parts of the country who were participating in the NER Trek 2018 that started on December 11.
He urged the cadets to maintain discipline and have a goal in life.
Grassroots politics
Sharing anecdotes about his life as a politician, Sangma said, “My purpose is to take the state forward and in the process, development will come.”
He spoke of the time he lost the first election and realised that connection with that grassroots level is of utmost importance for a politician to win elections.
He won the election and later he lost again stating that pride had taken the best of him, in which he campaigned only 2-3 days before the election hoping that the development works and his speeches in the Assembly would help him.
