NONGPOH: A seven-year-old housing project for the poor being implemented by Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) in Ri Bhoi district still requires Rs 6 crore more to be completed.
Director of MUDA E. Kharmalki informed this during an inspection initiated by local legislator of Nongpoh Mayralborn Syiem along with other leaders of the Nongpoh Town Committee. Several inspections and even changing of head officials over the years could not help the project, which started in 2011 at Umbuda village. During the inspection on Tuesday, Kharmalki assured that as many as 30-35 housing units out of 128 units will be renovated starting from February next from the funding of the state share amounting to Rs 1 crore and that the rest of the housing units will be completed as soon as the funds were made available.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of Nongpoh Town Committee (NTC) Rayonald Kharkamni while speaking to media persons said even after several decades, he is happy that the department is taking concrete steps to finish the pending project.
He also stated that once the 30-35 housing units are completed, the NTC will eventually adjust and allot them to BPL families in the first phase and to others in the following phases after proper verifications of documents.
