Song Krittan begins prior to the advent of Christmas and continues into the New Year. While Song Krittan is performed in all parts of Garo Hills, over the years the annual event at Dainadubi has gained immense popularity.
The tradition of ‘Song Kristan’ involves the beating of drums, cymbals and songs to thank the Almighty for a peaceful Christmas. The tradition involves everyone, men women, children who all rally collectively to music and celebration.
Thousands from both states performed ‘Song Kristan’ between the border villages between Assam and Meghalaya. The unique Garo celebration during Christmas season started from the village of Nishangram in Goalpara district of Assam to Bangsi Apal in North Garo Hills in Meghalaya and is the one of the most awaited gatherings every year that seeks to ring in the New Year with much aplomb.
“Being a border village, the celebration becomes even more important as it involves Garos from both states- Assam and Meghalaya.
Nishangram and its surrounding areas are historically significant to the Garos being in a sense the first of Garo settlements of Christianity in the region.
The entire event carried on for over 12 hours with enthusiastic participants carrying on the tradition that is unique to Garo Hills and Garos in particular.
More than 20 border villages were involved in the event today and many more came from across Garo Hills to be a part of the event. It is a celebration of age old traditions.
