SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Tuesday the NPP would meet soon to discuss whether to withdraw from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
The chief minister spoke to media persons soon after the Lok Sabha passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Terming the passing of the bill as “unfortunate”, Sangma said the state government had vehemently opposed the bill and the Cabinet had even passed a resolution against its implementation.
Sangma will call a party meeting and the matter of snapping ties with NDA will be discussed. The NPP has presence in five NE states.
Sangma held a short meeting on Tuesday with top NPP leaders at the Secretariat to discuss about the next course of action.
Deputy Chief Minister and NPP leader Prestone Tynsong too said the move to pass the bill in Parliament “is an assault on democracy”.
Tynsong said the government was unhappy as the bill was passed without taking into account the sentiments of the people of the North East.
He said the bill could have had a provision that the northeastern states would be exempted from its purview. “We will continue to express our discontentment,” he said.
