SHILLONG: The two BJP MLAs from Meghalaya, AL Hek and Sanbor Shullai who attended the National Convention of the BJP in New Delhi have opposed the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 that has been passed in Lok Sabha on January 8.

They handed over a  memorandum to the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi along with the state BJP president Shibun Lyngdoh opposing Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016

In the memorandum, Shullai asked the Prime Minister to reconsider the implementation of the Bill in the North Eastern states or omit Bangladeshis from the bill failing which he would have to take a strong decision considering the plight of the people of the state.

He said that the Bill would adversely affect the tribal belt of Meghalaya even as he added that the Bill would further encourage illegal influx into the state.

Stating that there is a huge resentment against the Bill in the state, he added the Bill would make illegal migrants eligible for citizenship on the basis of religion which violates Article 14  of the constitution.

It may be mentioned that another BJP MLA  and Cabinet Minister, AL Hek has already opposed the Bill
