Police file suo motu cases against pressure groups

SHILLONG: Meghalaya police has registered suo motu cases against different pressure groups of the state for calling agitations in the city recently.
Police said a suo motu case was registered that on the afternoon of January 11, leaders and members of HYNF, RBYF and FKJGP had gathered at Khyndailad near the old Assembly building gate in protest against the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, in Parliament, without prior permission of the district magistrate of East Khasi Hills.
Police said whereby the gathering and protesting at a busy location had created fear psychosis among people ) and also obstructed movement of vehicles causing inconvenience to the public. Further, certain pressure group leaders gave speeches which promote enmity between different communities and religions.
A suo motu case was registered that on January 9, Confederation of Hynniewtrep Social Organisation (CoHSO) had called for ‘road blockade’ on January 10 and 11 from 7 pm to 5 am in the state, violating the order passed by the High Court of Meghalaya banning bandhs and publishing through any medium about bandh or road blockades which may disrupt normal life.
Another suo motu case was registered that on January 7, the North East Students Organisation (NESO) supported by the KSU had called a bandh on January 8, from 5 am to 4 pm, in protest against the bill, which again violated the High Court order.
