SHILLONG: Former BJP leader and Member District Council (MDC), Sofior Rahman has predicted that the move of the BJP as far as enforcing the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill will cost them dearly in the North East in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
Rahman recently resigned from the saffron party as a mark of protest against the contentious Bill
Speaking to media persons here on Monday, Rahman said that this bill was against the indigenous people and not just in Meghalaya but in the entire region and the BJP would not win selection in the entire North East,
Asked if he has decided to join any other party, Rahman said that he was still in alliance with the NPP at the GHADC and has not decided to join any party yet.
Earlier, in his letter to the BJP state president Shibun Lyngdoh, Sofior Rahman, an MDC of the BJP from Balachanda constituency cited some personal problem for leaving the party while also opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016.
It was also informed that West Garo Hills, BJYM president, Ataur Rahman Ahmed also tendered his resignation on Monday expressing his opposition to the Bill.
He further informed that all the members and the entire unit of the BJYM and minority morcha from West Garo Hills will resign en masse in a day or two.
It may be mentioned that BJP apart from losing AGP as its alliance partner has also lost some of its leaders in the North East who have resigned following the passing of the contentious bill in Lok Sabha
