Forest dept team to tranquilise wild jumbo in Chhattisgarh
Korba: A Forest department team has been deployed in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district to tranquilise a wild elephant which has killed four people in the past two weeks in Surajpur area and has now entered the Lemru forest range here, an official said on Sunday. The team, also having experts from the Wildlife Institute of India in Dehradun, was keeping an eye on the elephant’s movement in Lemru forest range under Korba forest division to tranquilise it, said S Venkatachalam, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Korba. He informed that the tusker, after being tranquilised, will be brought to the Elephant Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Tamor Pingla sanctuary of Surguja district. He said the team was rushed after permission for tranquilising the tusker was received from higher authorities, adding that the hilly terrain was causing difficulties in the operation. (PTI)

TN farmer’s son gets new heart under CM’s health scheme
Coimbatore (TN): A 26-year-old man, whose heart was functioning just 15 per cent, got a new lease of life after a heart transplant at a city hospital under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. The man, the son of a poor farmer hailing from Nambiyur in Erode district, was admitted to Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH) here a week ago After studying his health condition, cardiologists Prashant Vaijyanath and Sureshkumar decided that heart transplant would be the only permanent solution. The surgery was performed with a heart donated from a brain dead person last week. The transplant was done completely free of cost with the aid of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. The entire process – right from harvesting the heart from the brain dead person, transporting the organ safe and fast so as to reach the hospital and the transplant surgery – had to be completed within a short span of time, KMCH Chairman Nalla G Palanisamy said. “Time is critical and of paramount importance,” he said and appreciated the entire team’s performance. Kejriwal to not contest LS elections from Varanasi
Lucknow: The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday said its convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will not be contesting from Varanasi in the coming Lok Sabha elections, but the party will field a strong candidate for the seat. “Kejriwal will not contest the Lok Sabha polls, as he wants to give special focus to his state. The AAP will contest on all the Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Goa. The party will contest on some seats in UP, and final modalities will be worked out by February. Apart from Varanai, the party will contest from seats in eastern and western UP, where the organisation is strong,” AAP spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh told PTI on phone. Singh said in Delhi his party is working on education, health, farmers, power and providing drinking water. (PTI)

Emergency services affected due to doctors’ strike in Safdarjung
New Delhi: Emergency services at Safdarjung Hospital here were affected on Sunday as the resident doctors stayed away from work alleging one of their colleagues was manhandled by a Delhi Police head constable’s son who had come for treatment. According to police, son of Head Constable Vinod — who is posted at Safdarjung Enclave police station, Akshay Kumar (24), was taken to the hospital on Sunday morning after he complained of abdominal pain. An argument broke out between Akshay and the doctor on duty over the former allegedly not being given priority and subsequent delay in treatment, a senior police officer said. Enraged, Akshay punched the doctor, who sustained injuries on his nose. The accused fled from the hospital soon after the incident, he said. (PTI)

Fog disrupts flights at Bengaluru airport
Bengaluru: Fog during the early morning hours of Sunday in Bengaluru disrupted at least 52 flights at the city’s Kempegowda International Airport. “As a result of the fog, departure of 35 flights and the arrival of another 16 flights was delayed,” the airport operator Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) said in a statement here. One flight was diverted to Hyderabad due to the fog-related disruption, the statement added. The departure and arrival delays continued through the day at the airport. The tech hub’s airport has an average of 300 departures and arrivals each on a daily basis. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 28.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 14 degrees Celsius over the past 24 hours, according to the Bengaluru division of India Meteorological Department (IMD).
