KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah ascended the throne of Malaysia’s Pahang state on Tuesday, ahead of the country choosing its new head of state.
Sultan Abdullah took his oath in front of some 1,600 guests, comprising royal families, state government leaders and community leaders, reported Xinhua.
The succession of Sultan Abdullah as the state ruler was decided by the Pahang Royal Council in a meeting held last Friday.
The council unanimously agreed to appoint Sultan Abdullah to replace his father, who was reported to be ill and was no longer able to carry out his duties and responsibilities as ruler for the state. Therefore the move places Sultan Abdullah as a potential candidate for the next king, carrying the title of Yang di-Pertuan Agong who functions as the nation’s constitutional monarch in the country.
The selection of the next king has become a widely discussed topic after Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan stepped down on Jan 6. Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy, with nine sultans, who head their respective states and act as religious leaders, taking turns to serve as king for a five-year term. (UNI)
