Tripura forest dwellers block road against eviction notice
AMBASSA: Thousands of people from 700 families residing for decades in reserve forest have blocked the NH 8 demanding withdrawal of notice from the forest department in the subdivision of Ambassa in the northern Tripura district of Dhalai here on Tuesday. The agitators have been residing at the local habitat of TRTC Para in the district headquarters for decades. Recently, the forest department served notices to those families to show cause as why they should not be evacuated from the reserve forest area. 700 families had got the notice and Tuesday was the last date to show cause. Later, officials assured the agitators to look into the matter after which the blockade was lifted. (UNI)
Man held with heroin in Mizoram
AIZAWL: Officials of the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department on Tuesday seized 34.5 gm of heroin at Khawkawn village in Champhai district and arrested a man in this connection. The 50-year-old man was held for allegedly being in possession of the contraband worth around Rs 1.5 lakh, which was reportedly smuggled from Myanmar, a department spokesman said. The accused was booked under different sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and produced before a local judge, he said. (PTI)
Tripura cop held for liquor trade
AMBASSA: Police have nabbed a constable after villagers complained he was illegally dealing in liquor openly for decades in the bordering subdivision of Kamalpur in the northern Tripura district of Dhalai here. The police constable identified as Rajesh Ghosh from the village of Kandigram in the bordering subdivision has allegedly long been involved in the illegal act even in uniform. Several times, police were informed but no action was taken. At last, the agitated villagers raided his house and handed him over to police with huge quantity of liquor. (UNI)
