SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has opposed the appointment of two former leaders of Non Tribal Youths Union (NTYU) in different posts by the state government.
The government has appointed the former general secretary of NTYU, Pawan Sharma as the vice chairman of Meghalaya Commission on Resource Mobilisation and Vijay Raj, who held the post of president in NTYU, as the vice chairman of Meghalaya Programme Implementation.
In a statement issued here, general secretary of KSU, Donald Thabah said the NTYU was found in the 1990s with an objective to suppress and oppose the rights of the Khasi community.
Further, he said the NTYU would hold agitations such as bandhs to oppose laws meant to protect the indigenous people and attempt to bring in laws that affects the Khasi community such as bringing in the concept of municipal elections.
Terming the two NTYU leaders as enemies of Khasi community, Thabah said their appointment is a ‘gift’ that recognizes their agitation against the Khasi community in the past.
Terming Sharma and Ray as adversaries of the Khasi community especially of the union, the KSU has threatened to agitate if the government does not withdraw their appointment.
Meanwhile, the FKJGP Central Body expressed anger at the appointment of Sharma and Raj terming the two as ‘thorns pricking the Khasi community’.
Education Secretary of FKJGP, Kitboklang Nongphlang, recalled that the two were stumbling blocks pertaining to laws framed for the Hynniewtrep people.
Similarly, the FKJGP has demanded the state government to withdraw their appointment and threatened to resort to agitation saying, “If any problem comes up, the state government will take the responsibility.”
