SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said efforts were on to streamline the situation related to Harijan Colony.
In his address during the Republic Day function in Tura on Saturday, the chief minister said in 2018, the state government has been able to tackle the breakdown of law and order following the incident of assault of a Shillong Public Transport Service bus conductor and two others by some members of the Punjabi Community on May 31, which later turned violent due to the influence of social media and instigation of unknown vested interest group.
“With the imposition of indefinite curfew in vulnerable pockets, which was later extended to the whole city, and the arrest of many local youths involved in the incident, the situation gradually returned to normalcy,” he said.
According to the chief minister, the constitution of the High Level Committee to deal with the matter has brought effective mechanism for prompt legal action and efforts were on to streamline the situation.
