Twin meets in city to reject citizenship bill

SHILLONG: The organisations protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, will hold two public meetings on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) under the theme ‘Say no to Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016′ will hold a protest march cum public meeting at Motphran parking lot. The march will start from the KSU office at Jaiaw Chapel Road.
Other organisations which will take part are FKJGP, HNYF, RBYF, AJYWO and GSU, among others. The union has asked shopkeepers in Khyndailad and Iewduh to take part in the rally.
The Confederation of Hynniewtrep Social Organisations (CoHSO) will also hold a public rally or Dorbar Bah ki Khun U Hynniewtrep on Thursday. The rally will commence from Jaiaw Jingthangbriew and culminate at Students’ Field.
On the other hand, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has given its support to CoHSO’s public rally.
In a statement issued here, president of KHNAM Pyndapborthiaw Saibon appealed to the Hynniewtrep people to come out and send a message of opposition to the bill.
Social organisations across the North East have expressed their resentment against the bill in which sporadic cases of violence were also reported.
The bill seeks to provide citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan and the BJP-led NDA government is determined to go ahead with it.
NPP, which is an ally of the BJP at the Centre, has also passed a Cabinet resolution to oppose the bill and has joined hands with AGP to protest against it.
