UDP will push for anti-defection law in councils

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party has approved the draft manifesto of the party with promises of streamlining the administration and functioning of the District Councils in Jaintia Hills and Khasi Hills in Meghalaya.

Addressing newsmen on Monday, senior working president of the party, Bindo Lanong said if the UDP formed the Executive Committee in the district councils, it will push for anti-defection law.

The UDP will soon release the party manifesto after some improvement for the Council polls and party leadership has approved the draft manifesto.

He stated that the party will press harder for the anti-defection law to be in place in the District Councils. “It is there in the Parliament and State Assemblies, why not in the District Council?” he said.

Lanong also said the administration of Hima in the District Councils should be seriously looked into as there are some Himas that fall in the international border of Bangladesh.

Again, the party in its draft manifesto promised to manage the forests of the district councils, land laws which includes exploitation of minerals will also be looked into, agriculture.

The party is an ally of the Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA) led by the NPP MDC HS Shylla in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

UDP releases list

 The UDP has released the sixth list of candidates featuring six names to contest the Autonomous District Council Polls of Khasi hills and Jaintia Hills.

From the constituencies of East Jaintia Hills, Sutnga-Narwan -Hopingstone Bareh, Sumer- Krison Langstang, Rymbai-Khliehriat – Finelyness Bareh.

From East Khasi Hills, former Bharitya Janata Yuva Morcha (youth wing of the BJP) president, Egenstar Kurkalang will contest from the UDP from Nongkrem Constituency.

In West Khasi Hills, the party ticket went to the sitting MDC Equator Nongrang for Mairang constituency.

The party ticket for Umroi constituency in Ri-Bhoi District went to FD Ramsiej.

Informing this after the meeting of the state election committee, general secretary of UDP, Jemino Mawthoh said selection of candidates for six seats for Shillong city was completed.

In West Jaintia Hills out of 20 seats, 6 are left, in East Jaintia Hills out of 9 seats, 1 seat is left while candiudates for all the 11 seats in East Khasi Hills have been declared.

Candidates for two seats in South West Khasi Hills have been declared. For the five seats in West Khasi Hills, UDP has given Rambrai and Mawshynrut to HSPDP. Candidate for, only Jirang constituency is yet to be declared in Ri-Bhoi district.
