‘Centre must incorporate Instrument of Accession’
SHILLONG: The Chairman of Dorbar Ki Khlieh Nongsynshar Ka Ri Hynniewtrep John Kharshiing said public representatives should demand the Centre to incorporate the Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement under a separate article 370 (A) of the Indian Constitution. In a statement issued here, Kharshiing said that opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill and protecting the indigenous people is pointless without demanding for the incorporation of IOA & AA in the Constitution. He said that the State Assembly should pass a resolution on the matter and maintained that the incorporation of IOA & AA in the Constitution will protect the state from the impact of the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
Dorbar Bah ki Rangbah Kur ka Bri – U Hynniewtrep on Feb 2
SHILLONG: The executive committee (adhoc) of the Synjuk ki Rangbah Kur will hold a meeting of heads of different clans at the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture on February 2. Called the Dorbar Bah ki Rangbah Kur ka Bri – U Hynniewtrep, the meeting is set to discuss current issues being faced by the Khasi community. In a letter to the clan heads, president of Ka Synjuk ki Rangbah Kur and CEM of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) HS Shylla said that the theme of the meeting is ‘The role of clans in the community’.
Workshop on national tobacco control programme held in city
SHILLONG: A sensitization workshop for policy makers and officials from different departments was held at Civil Hospital in the city on Monday with an aim to strengthen the national tobacco control program in the state. The workshop was organised by the Department of Community Medicine, NEIGRIHMS in collaboration with the School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh and the state tobacco control cell, Govt. of Meghalaya. Pravin Bakshi, Health Secretary, graced the occasion as chief guest and stressed on strengthening tobacco control measures in the state by raising awareness among the population about the Tobacco Control Act.
KSU urges Nongthymmai residents to oppose CAB
SHILLONG: Members of the Khasi Students’ Union, Nongthymmai circle have appealed to the residents of Nongthymmai Pyllun and adjoining areas to support the opposition of the Citizenship Amentment Bill 2016. In a statement issued here, general secretary of KSU Nongthymmai Pyllun Richard Mawkhiew urged the people to participate in the rally cum public meeting scheduled for Wednesday and raised the apprehensions that the minority communities will be overwhelmed if citizenship is granted to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Community hall, ambulance inaugurated in South Shillong
SHILLONG: A Republic Day programme was organised by the monitoring cum implementation committee (MCIC) of 19th South Shillong Constituency in collaboration with the Dorbar Shnong Lower Lumparing recently. During the programme, the community hall cum office of the Dorbar Shnong of Lower Lumparing was inaugurated by local MDC Ricky Shullai who had sanctioned an amount of Rs 15 lakh for the building under the SPA District Council Scheme. Rangbah Shnong of Lower Lumparing Doncaster Shabong was present during the inaugural ceremony along with MLA Sanbor Shullai, members of Dorbar Shnong, Seng Kynthei and residents of the area. Meanwhile, in another programme at Iewdak Laban, local MLA Sabor Shullai inaugurated the multi-purpose ambulance cum mortuary van which Shullai had sanctioned for an amount of Rs 12,36,000 under the SUWP Scheme 2018. In his address to the gathering, Shullai said that as per the decision of the committee, the van will be first of its kind to render free services to BPL families under South Shillong Constituency. The programme was presided over by Edward Kharwanlang, Rangbah Shnong of the Dorbar Shnong Laban in the presence of members of the Dorbar Shnong, Seng Teilang ki Kynthei, Local NGO’s and residents of Laban.
Man escapes gangsters after being held to ransom
SHILLONG: A man who was kidnapped in North Garo Hills recently, managed to escape his kidnappers after being held for ransom. The kidnappers are suspected to be part of an inter-state gang from Assam. Earlier, Md. Tokbur Rahman lodged a complaint stating that on January 17 around 3:30 pm, an unidentified non-tribal person had hired his Bolero (AS-18C-9051) which was driven by his son Md. Solman Khan from Mendipathar parking lot for transporting vegetables from Dolgoma, Assam. However, on January 18 around 12:30 pm, the complainant received a phone call from his son informing him that he had been abducted and needed an amount of Rs 1 crore for his release. Police said that the victim managed to escape from the gang while they were sleeping and managed to reach the home of the secretary of the VDP of a village. Later, the secretary of the VDP accompanied him to the police station where he was able to record his statement.
Delay in school building completion irks Rongjeng groups
TURA: The A’chik Students’ Welfare Association (ASWA) and the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) have expressed disappointment over the slow pace of work with regard to the construction of a residential school at Rogjeng in East Garo Hills. “After the government announced the establishment of residential schools a few years back, the construction of one such school began at Narringgre under Dambo-Rongjeng Block. But it is very unfortunate that the construction of this school building is going extremely slow that even after 5 years from the date of commencement of the construction, the building is yet to be made ready for commencement of the academic sessions,” the organisations said in a joint statement. While questioning the concerned department for the irresponsible act, the two groups said that they were fed up with excuses and demanded for a proper investigation to find out the actual reason behind the delay.
Shop owners’ body formed, new rates for photocopies announced
TURA: Owners of photostat shops in and around Tura recently held a meeting at the Tura District Auditorium which resulted in the formation of the Tura Photostat Association. Office bearers to lead the new association were also elected comprising Robash Ch Sangma as president, Rajesh barman as secretary and BR Marak as treasurer along with five other executive members. The new body also announced new rates for photo stat service. As per the revised rate, amount charged per copy for A4 size Xerox would be Rs 3 for single side and Rs 4 for both sides, FS size Xerox (Legal) at Rs 4 for single side and Rs 5 for both sides, A3 size Xerox at Rs 5 for single side and Rs 8 for both sides. Lamination rates for A4 size, FS Size and ID Card were also revised at Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 20 respectively.
Miss Meghalaya 2019 auditions to be held on February 2
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Tourism Youth Development Society (MTYDS) in collaboration with Glamanand Supermodel India, will organise Miss Meghalaya 2019 – a road to Miss India Earth, Miss International and Miss Teen India – on February 16 at Bakur in Dawki. Society member Daniel Khongsit informed reporters on Monday that the winners of Miss Meghalaya will directly qualify for the finals of Miss India Earth and Miss International to be held in Mumbai and Delhi. Auditions for the beauty pageant will be held on February 2 at Youth Hostel. Contestants should also have a minimum height of 5.3 ft.

JOWAI: The unit Secretary of the National People’s Party in Mookyrdup, Jowai has informed that he has resigned from the post due to personal reasons. A resignation letter was sent to the Unit President and to the Jowai Block NPP Secretary.
Health Minister visits Ampati Civil Hospital
Ampati: Minister for Health & Family Welfare AL Hek visited Ampati Civil Hospital and gave his assurance to the district administration and hospital authorities that all issues and problems affecting the functioning of the hospital would be looked into expeditiously. The minister, who was accompanied by local MLA Miani D Shira, Deputy Commissioner Ramkumar S, District Police chief BSW Momin held a brief meeting with the district health officials and doctors where he was apprised of the basic requirements as well as issues concerning the hospital like construction of boundary and retaining wall, doctors’ quarters, completion of additional building, incomplete furnishing of the hospital, absence of a morgue in the hospital and requirement of additional building for ultra-sonography and X-ray machines. The minister assured the hospital authorities that their problems and grievances would be addressed with due urgency. The minister also directed the district health officials to ensure that all poor and deserving beneficiaries in the district are enrolled for the third phase of MHIS.
Farmers urge CM to develop villages in Adokgre
SHILLONG: Members of the Adokgre Farmers’ Association met Chief Minister recently urging him to develop 45 remote villages in the area. In a memorandum submitted to the chief minister, the association said the Adokgre is lagging behind in all respect as successive governments have ignored the region. The letter highlighted the perennial problems of kutcha road, dilapidated wooden bridges, lack of medical facilities and academic institutions and mobile phone network, among others. “However we firmly hope that under your able leadership our Adokgre area will receive kind attention of Government of Meghalaya,” it read. The association wants the government to complete the pending Rongjeng-Mangsang-Adokgre Road, upgradation of Kharkutta C&RD block to civil sub-division and creation of new C&RD block at Adokgre, upgradation of Adokgre PHC to CHC, construction of multi-facility centre and open auditorium, and upgradation of MLP anti-dacoity camp at Adokgre to police station.
