SHILLONG: Police personnel in South West Garo Hills were attacked by a group of 500-600 people when they tried to stop gambling.
The incident happened on the night of January 25, when the police from Salmanpara Police Station of the district were conducting patrol duty and they detected a gathering of people at Nokatgre village.
On enquiry by police, it was found that they were involved in gambling in the form of dices, reportedly organised by the Village Committee but when the police intervened, some unidentified persons including members of the Village Committee, challenged the police that the area is not under their Salmanpara PS jurisdiction. The mob then verbally abused the police personnel, attacked with empty bottles and also pelted stones at the police vehicle.
Bobby S.W Momin, District SP said that they have registered a case against the attackers and the investigation was on.
He also informed that the cops sustained minor injuries in the incident.
