TURA: Another case of illegal sale of land by a tribal to a non-tribal has been unearthed in West Garo Hill where a Garo village nokma and a haat committee member have been found to be involved.

The A’chik Youth Council (AYC), Central Administrative Council which brought the matter to light revealed that one, Buduram Rabha of Village New Potamati in West Garo Hills illegally sold his land to non-tribal Sukumar Saha of the same village.

According to the council, sale deed for the land was signed between the two parties way back in February 1, 2014 in the presence of then Potamati Haat Committee President and present Nokma of Bondukmali village, Karonsing A Sangma and another haat committee member, Kanu Marak of Rongmali village.

“The sale is a direct contravention of the Meghalaya Transfer of Land (Regulations) Act 1971 (Act No 1 of 1972). Transfer of any land to Non Tribals is prohibited under the same Act as mentioned in Clause (e) or clause (f) of sub section (1) of section 4,” Vice President of the AYC, Walseng N Sangma said.

Sangma while strongly condemning the illegal act has urged concerned authorities to take necessary action against both parties as early as possible.
