SHILLONG: NPP MDC HS Shylla on Thursday announced his resignation from the primary membership of the party at a public meeting here citing the lackadaisical attitude of the NPP-led state government to the bills passed by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
He made the announcement while speaking at the meeting of the Dorbar Bah ka Bri U Hynniewtrep organised by Confederation of Hynniewtrep Social Organizations (CoHSO) at Jaiaw, catching all by surprise.
He said he found it insulting to be in a party which is in power and yet unmoved to endorse the bills passed by the KHADC and has thus decided to quit.
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Inner Line as adopted from the Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873) Regulation Bill, 2018, Khasi Social Customs of Lineage, Bill, 2018 and Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Clan Administration) Bill, 2018 were passed by the district council last year. The three bills are currently with the District Council Affairs department of the state government.
Later, speaking to reporters, he said, “It is so insulting that they do not even appreciate their very own MDCs from the party. It is not (Narendra) Modi who blocks the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, and Dr Don (Donkupar Roy).”
He lamented that there is very little discussion in the NPP about the issues of the indigenous people. Instead, it is only about politics, he said.
Stating that he does not trust the political parties of the state, he said he was determined to not join any other in the state.
He also attributed his decision to resign from the NPP to the state government’s direction to the district councils to implement the Meghalaya Building Bye-laws, 2011 in scheduled areas, which has irked him.
“It is better to not remain in the party. The party had even opposed me to be the CEM,” Shylla said adding the opposition to him has once again been reflected in the government not passing the bills.
He criticised the chief minister and UDP president Donkupar Roy saying only Prime Minister Narendra Modi should not be blamed.
With the state government adamant not to implement the ILP, he said, “even if CAB is not implemented, ILP is a must.”
Speaking about Meghalaya Resident, Safety and Security Act, 2016 which was passed by the Congress government, he said the party and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma should apologise to the state of Meghalaya for coming up with the legislation.
“They should say that they regret passing the bill and they should declare it to be dead, then only we will forgive Congress otherwise we appeal to the people to not associate themselves with Congress as it intends to bury the minority community alive,” he said.
