Alas! North Eastern States

Editor,

What a waste of precious working hours, bandhs , rallies, meetings – all with a pre-decided agenda. Let it be understood by one and all that these so called agitations are nothing but video games played by political masters sitting inside their plush office chambers. Well, one may ask why do they do so? The reasons are aplenty but one significant reason is to destabilize the government by the power/money hungry predators both inside as well as outside the Government. When these political masters play games, they do it secretly but alas the innocent public gets instigated and starts lending support to the so- called cause of the agitation – they don’t even fully understand. They start lending support because something bad is going to happen to our Jaitbynriew and therefore we have to lend support to the slogan makers on the streets and eventually beat up and burn some non-tribal on the pretext of fighting for our Rights.

Do we even see any reason when we blindly jump into the agitational mode? Do we wonder why anyone with legal documents would want to settle in any part of the unwelcoming North East?  Statistics show that the original 20% non- tribal population of Meghalaya has been reduced to 12% and these are official figures. So do we really think that because of the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) the migrants from neighbouring countries will actually all want to migrate to NE and that too with proper documentation and do we also believe that we will allow them to settle here officially? Buy my word brothers and sisters we will not allow anyone to settle officially – we have already driven away 8% of the non- tribals who were officially citizens. But our eyes are closed when the unofficial ones have been illegally crossing the borders and settling permanently. And  they don’t need our permission. They come here with an agenda, marry our women, father off springs who are more theirs and less of the mother’s. We are already having hordes of them in our state and now about 3-4 electoral constituencies are fully theirs. What did we do about them? Nothing, because we did not want to do anything or are we too scared to do anything? So our might is shown on the rightful citizen of our state because he is vulnerable.

May I also ask why we think that the ultimate solution to every problem is the ILP. Do we understand that ILP can never be imposed and therefore whenever we want to create disturbances, ILP is the easiest and most, “saleable item?” Haven’t we raised this forever and ever? What do we want our state to be? Why do we want to destroy the Tourism sector where the entire state is now a huge stakeholder? Do we understand that ILP will be disastrous for the state in every imaginable manner? Do we even understand that its implementation would create monopoly  in all businesses thereby resulting in sky- rocketing of prices of all commodities? We have living examples in the state of Mizoram and Nagaland. Oh! Mizoram and Nagaland did I say? Why are they opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill when they already have the ILP? So what’s their agenda?

I am a son of the soil and see and understand the true picture. Please understand the dirty politics in the background and let us not act like puppets in the hands of a select few who make us dance to their tune and have the last laugh!

Cleaning up the Lukha river

Editor,

I personally congratulate the Sonapyrdi Tourism and Economic Development Society (STEDS) for the recent festival organised at Lukha river which aimed at the preservation and conservation of the pristine state of famous Lukha river. Yes, this well known river of East Jaintia Hills, which is one of the biggest rivers of Meghalaya has been subjected to pollution by coal mining and giant cement factories of Jaintia Hills. I also congratulate the Synjuk Ki Rangbah shnong of Sonapyrdi and its adjoining areas for trying their best to combat the evil forces which have polluted this same river. In fact, the Synjuk has had several meetings and conducted many awareness programmes for cleaning the river and for combating the pollution of the Lukha. As it is, this river is still subjected to pollution, especially during the monsoon months. There is the need to root out pollution altogether right at the source which is the coal mining activity and the release of effluents from the giant cement plants. It will be a great challenge for the STEDS and the Synjuk ki Rangbah shnong of Sonapyrdi to combat the pollution of the Lukha river but we all wish that the two NGOs with the help of government authorities and the public at large will defeat the evil forces that pollute this once great river

Why a BJP functionary in Govt program?

Editor,

The 2nd ASEAN – India Youth Summit is being held at Guwahati from February 3-7, 2019. It is definitely a welcome initiative. However, what is worrying and very odd is that Ram Madhav, the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is participating in the program, and unfortunately too the event is blatantly advertised with his photograph, to promote and create awareness about the program. While participation from various walks of life is desirable the role of a  political functionary is not at all desirable. In fact it is condemnable to have a political party functionary in a Government function, involving many nations. We must understand that Government programs and party politics do not go together.
