SHILLONG: Former HSPDP leader Ardent Basaiawmoit, who quit the party along with his supporters, said on Monday that he is yet to decide on which political party he would join.
Basaiawmoit, the former president of HSPDP was staying away from politics after he was defeated in the 2018 Assembly polls.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Basaiawmoit said he will take a decision to join any political party after holding discussion with his supporters.
When asked about the reason of leaving the HSPDP, Ardent said, “You know the reason and everyone is aware of the political developments.”
Ardent in the past had said the HSPDP would not like to be part of a government supported by BJP or Congress.
However, the two HSPDP MLAs are currently supporting the NPP-led MDA government.
There were rumours that Basaiawmoit will join the Congress but he remained non-committal on the matter.
Stating that currently he is busy with “some personal work and needs time to think” about his future course of action, Basaiawmoit said he will take an appropriate decision after taking his supporters into confidence.
‘Raised CAB in Assembly’
Commenting on the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Basaiawmoit said when he raised the issue in the Assembly in the past, nobody had supported him.
“I stick to my stand to oppose the bill as it badly affects the demography of our state,” he said.
During the budget session in March 2017, Basaiawmoit had raised a query and said if the persecuted Hindus from other countries are rehabilitated in Meghalaya following the bill, the state will be threatened.
However, in his reply, then Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh had assured that Meghalaya would not implement the bill.
