SHILLONG: Meghalaya Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe leakage of question papers of the Meghalaya Teachers Eligibility Test (MTET) on Thursday.
In addition, the police so far have arrested seven people in this connection while more arrests are likely to be made as and when more linkages are established.
Police sources informed that the SIT comprises officers of Gazetted level, cyber crime and police.
The sources also informed that the police are going by linkages as the question papers were shared in WhatsApp prior to the examinations and a Shillong-based lawyer of the high court filed an FIR at the Tura police station the same day.
Different NGOs and even Rajabala MLA Azad Zaman is demanding a CBI inquiry into the matter.
However, the state government is mum on the entire demand of probing the matter through the CBI.
Teachers demand re-test
The Meghalaya Elementary Pre-service Trained Teachers Association has said the MTET should be re-conducted in view of the leakage of question papers.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, president of the association, Kiewshaphrang JW Thabah, said certain measures should be adopted by the Education department to ensure the fair conduct of examinations.
“The date of examinations should be announced as early as possible. The invigilators should also be given training. Scanners should be used and CCTV cameras should be installed or a videographer appointed and the question papers should also be properly kept and sealed,” he said.
Criticising the functioning of the state government and the Education department, he said the state government should take action against the culprits who leaked the question papers and to tackle such problem of leaked papers.
Though clear instructions were written on the admit card disallowing the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices, he alleged examinees blatantly violated the rule.
Complaints on the violation of the rule made to the invigilators fell on deaf ears, he alleged.
The association had recently suggested to the Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui, to conduct fair examinations and to install CCTV cameras to check malpractices.
Thabah expressed discontentment at the processes involved in filing the applications and obtaining their admit cards for the examination.
