SHILLONG: The Harijan Colony residents have accused the state government of misleading the National Commission for Safai Karmacharis by taking its chairperson Valjibhai Zala to Goraline, Laitumkhrah, instead of the actual place, Them Iew Mawlong.
Gurjeet Singh, Secretary of Harijan Panchayat Committee, said on Tuesday that neither the state government nor the commission called the representatives of the Harijan Colony for the meeting held on Monday.
According to Singh, it is an irony that the real people were not taken into confidence when the commission met the government officials.”It is strange that the commission did not even visit Harijan Colony,” Singh said.
The commission had asked the residents at Harijan Colony to shift to the quarters at the current Shillong Municipal Board site.
However, Singh clarified that the quarters were never allotted to them.
“We don’t understand why the government cannot provide accommodation to us at the current site by improving the area,” Singh said.
He also reminded that from time immemorial, thanks to the Syiem of Mylliem, the Harijan Colony was the home of those who were entrusted to clean the city.
