SHILLONG: Education Minister and Amlarem MLA, Lahkmen Rymbui on Sunday asserted that the border fencing should be on the Zero Line as otherwise it creates difficulties for the people and suggested the government discusses the matter.
“The fencing of the international border should be on the Zero Line so that there is no loss of land for the people. I support the people since the fencing should not bring any loss to them,” he told reporters.
He informed that in War-Jaintia, fencing was not allowed by the people although authorities concerned have surveyed the land for the work.
On the other hand, he alleged that people from Bangladesh often stole stones, boulders and wood belonging to farmers.
“People are not against fencing, but are apprehensive that they will lose their land in the process,” Rymbui said.
It may be mentioned that social organisations have been opposing the fencing demanding that it should be erected on Zero Line and not 150 yards from it inside Indian territory, fearing that farmers will lose their cultivable land.
