Suspected militants make failed bid to kidnap bizman in Assam
Udalguri: Suspected militants of All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA) have made a failed bid to kidnap a businessman in Lower Assam’s Udalguri district, police said on Sunday. Six miscreants came in three motorbikes and opened fire before hurling a grenade, which did not explode, at a market place in Panery in the district Saturday night, in their attempt to kidnap the businessman, Circle Inspector Durga Kingkar Sarma said. Local people, however, came to the rescue of the man, and contacted the police, he said. The grenade has been defused and three suspected militants of the Adivasi militant group arrested in connection with the incident, Sarma said, adding that the situation was under control. (PTI)
Arun Prabha to be linked to Airtel, Dish TV services: Official
Itanagar: ‘Arun Prabha’, the 24th Doordarshan satellite channel inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here, will be linked to Airtel and Dish TV platforms, a senior official said. The channel, presently available via Doordarshan’s DTH (direct to home) service, was launched Saturday, exclusively for the northeast states. Modi dedicated the channel to the people of Arunachal Pradesh. Doordarshan Director General Supriya Sahu said Arun Prabha, once linked to Airtel and Dish TV, will give global viewers an opportunity to learn about the diverse culture of northeast India. The region already has another exclusive channel, ‘DD North-East,which telecasts entertainment and information- based programmes in Assamese, Bengali, English among other local languages. We have written to the central government and measures will be taken to ensure that viewers across the world get to learn about the Land of Rising Sun and other states in the region, Sahu told PTI. Vision screening drive in Mizoram
NEW DELHI: A vision screening programme in remote areas of Mizoram has benefited a large number of children from underprivileged background and plan is afoot to expand the programme, the NGO running it has said.
The India Vision Institute (IVI) in collaboration with a major eye glass maker has also distributed free spectacles to several children in these areas. “The vision screening programme has worked to provide coverage to underprivileged children in Serchhip and Lunglei districts. Some 450 children found to have refractive errors in the districts are being provided free spectacles,” the IVI said in a statement. The IVI is a not-for-profit registered trust focussed on supporting and promoting eye health awareness, research, education and technological development in Indian optometry to advance capacity in vision correction, and prevention of eye disease and blindness. As part of the campaign, at Aijal Club in Aizawl recently, free spectacles were distributed to 30 children from Serchhip district, who were among those screened earlier by IVI in Serchhip and Lunglei.
