SHILLONG: Former chief minister Mukul Sangma has remained non-committal on contesting the Tura Lok Sabha seat though he is seen as one of the favourites by the AICC.
When asked about the reports that he is being considered by the AICC as the most preferred candidate to contest from Tura, Sangma said, “I have not thought about it.”
Earlier, the AICC sources had said Sangma, who is also the Congress Legislator Party leader and sitting MP Vincent H Pala are most likely to contest from Tura and Shillong Lok Sabha seats respectively.
According to media reports, this was informally discussed and agreed in a meeting where Rahul Gandhi himself favoured the idea.
The meeting of party presidents of several states and CLP leaders was convened by AICC recently to discuss about the impending Lok Sabha polls to be announced anytime next month.
Sangma’s brother and legislator Zenith Sangma and former Cabinet Minister Deborah Marak are also keen to contest from Tura.
But after series of debacles in polls in the past, the party is counting on every seat and does not want to take any chance.
