Power failure stalls Metro Railway services in Kolkata
Kolkata: Metro Railway services were disrupted Wednesday due to a breakdown in power supply to a Kavi Subhash-bound rake, shortly after its departure from Dum Dum station. The train, which halted on the tracks at 1 pm, was immediately evacuated and passengers had to walk back to the platform at Dum Dum station, Metro spokesperson Indrani Banerjee said. The Railway Protection Force (RPF), Kolkata Police and state disaster management personnel, apart from Metro Railway officials, escorted the passengers to the platform, she said. Truncated services were being run between Belgachia station in the north and Kavi Subhash in the southern part of the city owing to the snag. Banerjee said work was on to rectify the problem and restore normal operation. (PTI)
Cop duped of Rs 13.81 lakh by woman in Thane
Thane: Awoman allegedly duped a 32-year old junior police official of Rs 13.81 lakh in Thane district of Maharashtra by promising her a flat at cheaper rate in a posh housing complex, police said on Wednesday. The complainant, posted as police naik at the Thane Police Commissionerate, said she met the accused, identified as Deepali, a resident of Mumbai, in October last year when the latter claimed that she was into real estate and export-import businesses, a police spokesperson said. The accused promised that she would arrange an apartment costing Rs 1 crore at half the price for the complainant and also a good job abroad for her husband. For this, she allegedly took a token amount and some advances totalling Rs 13.81 lakh from the complainant, the police said. However, the accused kept giving excuses and did not deliver on her promise. Meanwhile, she was arrested in another cheating case, the spokesperson said. (PTI)
Uttarakhand to getnational law university
Dehradun: The Centre has decided to set up a national law university in Uttarakhand, an official statement said here on Wednesday. “Here is good news for all those youths who want to make a career in law. The Chief Minister (Trivendra Singh Rawat) has informed that the national law university will be opened in Uttarakhand,” the statement said.This is a big step toward making Uttarakhand a quality education hub, it added. Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving his nod to open the law university in the state, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said that the Modi has special love for Uttarakhand. India has 21 national law universities, admissions to which are held through a Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). (IANS)

Srinagar: Seventeen students were injured on Wednesday in a mysterious explosion inside a tuition centre in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, triggering clashes between civilians and security personnel. Six of the students with critical splinter injuries were shifted to Srinagar for specialized treatment from Narbal village near Kakapora town. The tuition-cum-coaching centre was being run in a private school. All educational institutions are closed in the Kashmir Valley these days due to winter recess. “Eleven of the students are being treated at the Pulwama District Hospital,” a police officer said. “The exact facts as to what caused the explosion are being ascertained.” An earlier report said the explosion took place when one of the students was fiddling with a grenade he was carrying. Meanwhile, clashes broke out between security forces and civilian protesters as news about the explosion spread in Narbal village. (IANS)
