SHILLONG: With the police not making much progress in their probe into the assault of activists Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma, the latter have reiterated the need for a CBI investigation into the matter.
The duo were assaulted by coal dealers at Sohshrieh, East Jaintia Hills, on November 8 for probing illegal coal mining and transportation.
The fresh demand for CBI probe came from the activists after the police arrested four non-tribals in connection with the case.
According to media reports, Somor Sing Dalu from Rasim Matia, Kiran Mohon from Domosara, Tripura, Mahan Ali from Kismet Mohonbari and Mahibul Hussain from Benegar, Bongaigaon were arrested by the police.
“We are surprised over the arrest of non-tribals as they were not present when we were assaulted”, Amita said.
Agnes said the ploy of the police is to drag the case by arresting people who are not involved, while the actual culprits are still at large.
“The attackers spoke in Pnar language, so how come non-tribals are in the picture”, Agnes asked.
She added that the non-tribals cannot come to the locality and attack them easily.
According to Amita, many perpetrators of the crime, including Hamlen Rymbai, have secured bail, while people who committed petty crimes are still languishing in jails.
Amita said police are yet to take action against Lukas Shylla who instigated the crowd to attack them.
“There was also a lady from a nearby tea shop who gave sticks to the attackers to beat us up with”, Amita said, adding that the woman is yet to be arrested.
