GUWAHATI: BJP’s national president Amit Shah will address a gathering of 1 lakh youth party members at Lakhimpur in Assam on February 17, 2019.
Informing this during a press briefing, state BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass on Thursday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president will participate in the conference of the members of BJP Yuva Morcha in Lakhimpur as a preparation for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.
Dass said, “BJP’s national president Amit Shah will address a large gathering of 1 lakh members of the BJP Yuva Morcha on February 17 in Lakhimpur keeping in view the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.”Stating that preparations are going on for the conference, Assam BJP president Dass said apart from party president Amit Shah, the youth party members’ meeting will also be attended by Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
It may be mentioned that before contesting the Assembly elections from the Majuli Assembly constituency and becoming the chief minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal was sitting Member of Parliament of Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency. After Sonowal’s resignation as the MP, the Lakhimpur seat remained vacant and in the by-elections held in 2016, BJP Pradan Baruah was elected as the new MP.It will be important to see what strategies the BJP would take in the wake of NDA government’s failure to table the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the Rajya Sabha and get it passed.
The contentious Citizenship Bill, which was passed in Lok Sabha on Januaey 8, 2019, could not be tabled on Wednesday and lapsed in the Rajya Sabha.
The saffron party earlier announced that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill would be one of the important issues in its election agenda. (Agencies)
