Operation Zero Litter begins at Khyndai Lad

SHILLONG: To stop Khyndai Lad from getting littered on a daily basis, “Operation Zero Litter” was launched for the first time by Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, M War Nongbri at Khyndai Lad on Friday.
The project is a joint effort by the Shillong Municipal Board and Home Guards & Civil Defence with the objective to achieve a zero-litter Khyndai-Lad within 30 days from the beginning of the operation.
Addressing the launch programme, War said that the initiative needs to be taken in the right earnest to keep Khyndai-Lad area litter free. She said that there is a need for a collective effort of all the stakeholders and the public and urged everyone to be a part of the campaign.
“We need to put a little bit of effort and help each other out to make this programme a success,” she said.
CEO, Shillong Municipal Board, BS Sohliya,who also attended the event, said he is hoping the programme will have tangible and concrete results and that it will spread to other spots in the city.
Sources from Shillong Municipal Board told The Shillong Times that there will be Home Guards deployed to maintain a check.
“There will be two batches each with 10 Home Guard personnel. The first batch will be deployed from 8 am to 3 pm and the next from 3 pm to 10 pm,” the source said. A map is also prepared for the Home Guards personnel to be deployed.
