SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Wednesday said it would be instrumental in forming the executives of the KHADC and JHADC.
Elections to the two district councils are slated for February 27.
Senior UDP leader Jemino Mawthoh said people were more inclined towards the regional forces.
Mawthoh was particularly confident of securing a good win in JHADC.
Mawthoh said the party was doing really well in Jaintia Hills and was confident of winning.
He, however, added that as far as Khasi Hills is concerned there will be a close fight, but the UDP will put its best foot forward to win each and every seat.
“We are very positive that we are going to be a part of the executive committees in both KHADC and JHADC,” said Mawthoh.
He further said the poll tempo was picking up and his party was doing well at the grass roots level. He said he was simultaneously also campaigning for himself for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
“As general secretary of the party, I have been campaigning in all the constituencies and campaigning is going on in full swing,” Mawthoh added.
Asked about the Congress, Mawthoh said, “Congress is a spent force. In some constituencies they maybe strong because of the candidates, but as a party it is a spent force.”
Stating that the support base of the Congress is slowly declining, Mawthoh said, “I don’t think people would be inclined to vote for the Congress in the council elections”.
It may be mentioned that the UDP is in alliance with the HSPDP and has been a formidable force in the district council elections.
