Infant’s body recovered
SHILLONG: Police on Friday recovered the body of a baby boy which had been dumped in Madanriting. Police said that an investigation is on and the body has been sent to the Civil Hospital for postmortem.

New Selsella power sub-division
TURA: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday inaugurated the Selsella Distribution Sub-Division at Multi Facility Centre Building, Selsella, in the presence of Meghalaya Power Minister James K Sangma, GHADC CEM Dipul R Marak, Government Chief Whip Marcuise Marak, Co-Chairman, State Planning Board Benedic Marak and other dignitaries. The Selsella Sub-Division Office of MePDCL has been carved out from Phulbari and Garobhadha sub-division for better power supply, maintenance and payment of bills.The office is temporarily functioning from Bharat Nirman Rajiv Gandhi Sewa Kendra Building, Selsella.  Speaking during the programme, Conrad Sangma congratulated the Minister, In-charge Power and the officers and staff of MeECL for their dedicated work in serving the people of the region.  Meanwhile, James K Sangma said that the setting up of the permanent office at Selsella was the only solution to solve all the problems faced by the people.

Bangladeshi beef smugglers held
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force troops managed to apprehend four Bangladeshi nationals and one Indian who were trying to smuggle 300kgs of beef to Bangladesh along the International Border at Muktapur in West Jaintia Hills. The smugglers were travelling in a TATA Spacio (ML-04- A- 7542) and have been identified as Noor Islam (45), Abdul Kalam (18), Shwel Ahmed (26) Kamal Miya (38) and Samiwell Lyngdoh. An amount of 6025 Bangladeshi Taka was also recovered from their possession. The smugglers and the seized item were later handed over to the concerned department for further legal action. It may be mentioned that the BSF has stepped up its special drive against the smugglers and has intensified its operations on the Indo-Bangladesh Border to prevent criminal activities in the border areas of Meghalaya.

Art appreciation week ends
SHILLONG: An art appreciation week organised by Martin Luther Christian University concluded in the city on Thursday. A total of 270 students attended the programme which kicked off on February 18. Activities included sessions on Plein Air Painting, Cyanotype process of historical photography, Installation Art and Portrait Painting. The resource persons for these seminars were renowned freelance painter Careen J Langstieh, writer, documentary filmmaker and photographer Conrad Syiem, Rangskhembor Mawblei, a Master of Fine Arts graduate from Visva-Bharati in West Bengal and Casper Syiem who demonstrated on Plein Air Painting. The event culminated with an art exhibition on wherein various works of art were exhibited including Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Van Gogh’s and Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn’s self portraits, Jacques Louis’ Le Sacre de Napolean, Claude Monet’s Adolphe Monet Reading in the Garden.

Financial literacy campaigns
SHILLONG: Lifetime Solution, an NGO in public interest, has successfully conducted 80 Go Digital India cum Financial Literacy Awareness Campaigns (GDIFLAC) from September 20, 2018 to February 8, 2019.The programmes were conducted in collaboration with the State Bank of India, Ri-Bhoi under Region-3 of SBI, Shillong. The campaigns were conducted in 80 villages under Ri-Bhoi in 3 different Blocks namely Bhoirymbong, Umsning and Umling to facilitate financial inclusion through provision of literacy and easy access with the objective of imparting knowledge to enable financial planning, inculcate saving habits and improve the understanding of financial products leading to effective use of financial service by the common man. The programmes included awareness on flagship programmes such as Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojna (PMMY) Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojna (PMJJBY) Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojna (PMSBY) Credit Guarantee Trust for Micro and Small Enterprise (CGTMSE) and Stand up India. As many as 3063 participants took part in the programmes out of which 80 percent of the beneficiaries were women belonging to SC/ST categories. Village headmen also issued letters of appreciation to Lifetime Solution for taking such an initiative.
