Decline in crime against women & children, claim police

SHILLONG: The rate of crime against women and children in Meghalaya has dropped by quite a number as per the Meghalaya Police statistics.
The crimes against women reported in Meghalaya during 2017 were 594 but the numbers came down to 481 in 2018, the police said.
Similarly while talking about the crime against children, the police informed that in 2017 as many as 360 crime cases against children were reported which now reduced to 292 in 2018.
However, most of the crimes against women are related to rape and assault with intent to outrage her modesty as in 2018, out of 481 cases, 67 of it were rapes and 85 of it were assault on women.
Similarly, in 2017 out of 594 crime cases against women, there were 119 rape cases and there were as many as 298 cases registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).
