TURA: The Garoland State Movement Committee has written to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to provide financial assistance to Batsrang A Sangma of Tebronggre village under Rongram Block, who defying all odds took the first position in the non-elite category of the Delhi Half Marathon, last week.
“Batsrang has made everyone in our state proud by his achievement. His hard work has brought glory to Meghalaya and we urge upon the state government to provide some form of financial assistance for the young athlete,” said Balkarin Ch Marak, co-chairman of GSMC.
The 22 year old athlete became a marathon superstar overnight after news broke of his victory at the 3rd edition of the Delhi Half Marathon in the non elite (amateur 18-25 years) category.
His performance was so impressive that he was placed 2nd in the overall run, behind the professional (elite) run winner by just a minute.
Batsrang completed the 21 km run with a timing of 1 hour 10 minutes while the elite competition winner crossed the finish line in 1 hour 9 minutes.
Son of a farmer from Tebronggre village, on the road to Dadenggre civil sub-division region, Batsrang had also hit the podium at the Kolkata Half marathon by coming 3rd in the amateur category, earlier this year.
Batsrang is a degree student of Durama College in Tura.
