
Sec 144 to prevent pollution
MAWKYRWAT: South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo has imposed Section 144 prohibiting washing of vehicles in rivers and streams. “The decision was taken after getting information that some people are washing vehicles in rivers and streams in different parts of South West Khasi Hills. This will affect and pollute the water bodies which in turn will affect the health and welfare of people in the district,” Laloo said. Laloo has also urged village authorities and the public to inform about those violating the order that will come into force with immediate effect.
Pension scheme soon in Ri Bhoi
NONGPOH: The Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi has informed that the pension scheme under Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) launched by the Central Government will be implemented in the district soon. The scheme will benefit un-organised workers between 18 to 40 years of age with an income of not more than fifteen thousand per month. For more information on the scheme, individuals can visit Common Service Centres (CSC) within the district or visit ribhoi.gov.in.
St Edmund’s teachers felicitated
SHILLONG: Two senior faculty members of St Edmund’s College, Shillong, were felicitated for their contribution to the college till their retirement. Saidun Nessa from the Department of Political Science was felicitated for her career spanning over 33 years since her joining on October 1985. She served as the Head of the Department from 1991 to 2019. Iamon Syiem from the Department of Sociology was also felicitated in the programme. She holds to her credit as being the founder of the department in May 1985. She is also connected with numerous women organisations. Principal Sylvanus Lamare, acknowledging the contribution of the two senior teachers, thanked them for their service spanning over three decades. The teaching and non-teaching staff were present at the farewell ceremony held on the college premises.
9th annual day at NEIGRIHMS
SHILLONG: NEIGRIHMS will be organising a programme to celebrate its 9th Annual Day at 2pm on Friday at the institute auditorium within the campus. Rakesh Sasibhusan, chairman cum managing director, Antrix Corporation Ltd, will grace the occasion as the chief guest along with Sanjeev Mishra, director of AIIMS Jodhpur as the guest of honour. The programme will be followed by a graduation ceremony of MBBS (2013 batch), MD/MS, DM and M.Sc. nursing at 3:25 pm and a cultural programme at 4:45pm. With the strength of 30 beds in 2001, NEIGRIHMS has come a long way to the present bed strength of 567 with 18913 in-patient admissions in 2018-19 alone. The undergraduate programme (MBBS) began in 2008, followed by postgraduate programmes (MD/MS) in various specialities in 2009. The post-doctoral programme in cardiology has been running since 2012.
Concern over illegal construction
TURA: The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) has raised concern over the mushrooming of illegal RCC buildings constructed by non-tribals in most of the rural market places belonging to the GHADC in Garo Hills. The construction of the alleged illegal buildings was unearthed following an inspection of one building at Garobadha GHADC weekly market. The committee has also blamed the GHADC for allowing the same to go on unabated. “The majority of the RCC buildings in the market are owned by non-tribal traders. When we asked around on the matter, the non-tribal traders confidently replied that these plots in the said market are being allotted for constructions by the Chief Executive Member of the GHADC himself,” the committee claimed. The GSMC in their letter to the GHADC CEM demanded immediate demolition of all illegal constructions in Garo Hills within seven days failing which it would take its own course of action.
Act on promises: Forum to govt
TURA: The United Action Committee (UAC) has submitted a representation to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma urging him to look into various urgent issues concerning North Garo Hills. The UAC comprises of organisations from North Garo Hills such as FAF, FKJGP, AYWO, AAYF, Matgrik Do’mesal and all youth clubs of Bajengdoba. The committee raised the issue of unsystematic and poor quality of the ongoing road construction work along NH51 to Rongronghat via Raja Apal village. The UAC also reminded of the proposed setting up of institutions like the Jawahar Novodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) at Raja A’pal, the 100 bed Hospital at Chidaret and the 7th MLP Batallion Headquarter at Nengsa A’pal. The UAC pointed out that mobile network service in the region has deteriorated over the past few months and urged the government to look into the issue.
GSU deadline for new bridge
TURA: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), East Zone along with the Williamnagar Government College Students’ Union (WGCSU) served a deadline of fifteen days for the East Garo Hills District Administration to resume work on the Rongap Bridge at Baija in Williamnagar. The Rongap Bridge has been bone of contention for organisations of the region after its construction was abandoned half way with no work being done on the bridge for over a decade now. The union while resuming their demand for its completion has warned that it would resort to agitation once again if the East Garo Hills District Administration ignores the ultimatum.
Shops gutted at Jadi market
TURA: A late night fire that broke out in Jadigittim market of South Garo Hills destroyed as many as a dozen shops before it could be brought under control. Jadigittim market is approximately 55 km from Baghmara. According to police, the fire is believed to have been caused by a short circuit from one of the shops. The fire reportedly broke out around 1am and quickly swept through the small stalls. Timely intervention of fire tenders from the Fire and Emergency brigade at Nangalbibra and Williamnagar helped to bring the blaze under control.
Child reunites with family
TURA: A ten year old girl child who went missing last week has been found and reunited with her family on Thursday morning. The little girl, Waldime S Sangma, hailing from Napak Bolchugre village of Songsak in East Garo Hills went missing from Mondol Tilla locality in Hawakaha, Tura on February 23. She was found near Chandmari bus station on Thursday morning by an uncle and was later handed over to her family.
Order confuses GH truckers
TURA: The Local Truck Owners and Drivers Committee, Tura have expressed dissatisfaction over a notification restricting the movement of heavy vehicles along the town roads. The apprehension by the truckers comes after they misinterpreted the recent notification on restrictions issued by the west Garo Hills Superintendent of Police on Wednesday.
