Theatre fest in city begins today

SHILLONG: A national drama festival, organised by National School of Drama in collaboration with the state Arts and Culture Department, in the city will bring together some of the best plays in various languages.
Rashtriya Poorvattar Rang Utsav will be held for the first time in Shillong beginning Friday. Ten renowned theatre groups from different states have been selected for the festival.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Jyoti Narayan Nath, a member of National School of Drama, said the aim of the festival is to develop and popularise theatre among youngsters.
“The main motto is to develop interest in theatre amongst the people of the North East,” he said.
According to Nath, theatre is a therapy and it is an effective art form for the society that necessitates the need to promote it.
B Kharjana, archivist at the Arts and Culture Department, said the department in collaboration with National School of Drama and the Union Ministry of Culture will also support the festival of theatre.
“This festival is a unique programme that is one of its kind and organised for the first time in Shillong. The main objective is to reach out to theatre enthusiasts to disseminate theatre knowledge and strengthen theatre practices in our state,” she said.
Theatre groups from Bengaluru, Kochi, Pune, Chandigarh, Kolkata, New Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain and Mumbai will be performing at the 10-day festival.
