JOWAI: Soon after the election results were declared for Mowkaiaw constituency in West Jaintia Hills, supporters of NPP candidate Heirtami Suting, who lost the election, attacked all those families alleged to have supported UDP candidate Winning Garland Sungoh, who was declared winner.
“The NPP supporters attacked us with stones and lethal weapons. They threatened to kill us and we had to run to the nearby jungle to save our lives,” a woman told this correspondent.
Sources also informed that many houses were damaged in stone pelting and the attackers also used lethal weapons. Vehicles were damaged in the attack.
Immediately after receiving information, West Jaintia Hills police rushed to Mowkaiaw to control and take stock of the situation.
“The situation is very bad, I have no time to speak to you now please,” said a police officer who rushed to the village immediately.
After taking stock of the situation, the West Jaintia Hills district administration imposed a prohibitory order under Section 144 of the CrPC and banned gathering of more than five people in the same place and also from carrying any weapon.
