SHILLONG: Conceived years ago and completed too, the abattoir in Mawlai Mawroh is yet to become operational.
An official from the animal husbandry and veterinary department said that the trial run of the project is still on.
The official also said that the government is contemplating handing over the project to the Khasi Jaintia Butchers Association.
As per plans, the abattoir would be handed over to the association on lease for a period of ten years while the property will belong to the state government.
Earlier, the department had contemplated privatising the project.
The abattoir was built at a cost of Rs 22 crore by Rapsang Group of Companies in collaboration with Real Growth Company, Chennai.
The original plan was to slaughter 240 cows, 160 pigs and a number of goats on daily basis.
The facility would also bring an end to open slaughter of animals and ensure safe and hygienic meat.
The government is planning similar abattoirs in Tura and Jowai as well.
