SHILLONG: The flood management programme that was planned six years ago to protect the Wahumkhrah and the Umshyrpi rivers in the city remains a no-starter even as rampant pollution of the water bodies continues thanks to government apathy.
The Water Resources Department had prepared a Rs 50-crore detailed project report (DPR) for flood management programme.
An official of the department said the proposal is still pending for approval even as it was informed that the government has been asked by the Water Resources Ministry to reply to several queries.
“Also, we have to examine the estimates, besides updating so many things in the project,” the official said.
The programme was supposed to tackle floods caused by the two rivers during monsoon as the state government plans to construct drains on the small streams which would lead to the Wahumkhrah.
The DPR was aimed at creating awareness among the public on the need to preserve and protect the rivers.
