GUWAHATI: Retired IPS officer from Assam, Dilip Borah, was appointed the convener of National People’s Party (NPP) for Assam, on Sunday.
NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma handed over the appointment letter to Borah in a hotel here.
Borah had quit Asom Gana Parishad on February 21 and recently joined the NPP.
“Yes, I have been handed over the appointment letter here today by party president Conrad Sangma who had come here after attending a programme in New Delhi,” Borah told The Shillong Times here on Sunday evening. The development comes just a few weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha elections with NPP planning to contest the polls from Assam.
“The NPP office here at Kahilipara Road near Ganesh Mandir will be inaugurated by Conrad Sangma on March 6. We have plans to contest the Lok Sabha elections and discussions are under way to field candidates in several constituencies,” Borah said.
Assam has 14 Lok Sabha constituencies.
Party sources say that Borah, who was with AGP, had quit the party to join NPP as he “is a strong believer in regionalism” and also “feels that NPP is a better forum to fulfill the objectives of regionalism, which unfortunately was found wanting in AGP”.
In August last year, NPP had launched its unit in Dima Hasao, Assam with 16 members of a newly-floated party, Hills People Forum, joining the Conrad-led party.
