SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will inaugurate the Lakroh mini hydel project at Lakroh in Amlarem civil sub-division of West Jaintia Hills district on Tuesday.
The 1.5 mw project on the Lakhroh river was sanctioned in 2007. The commissioning of the power project assumes significance in view of the fact that the state is power-deficit. The problem has been compounded with NEEPCO regulating supply due to unpaid bills amounting to over over Rs 550 crore thus forcing the government to resort to load shedding.
Load shedding continues in the city for an hour every day despite the fact that thousands of students are appearing for the HSSLC examinations. The SSLC examinations will begin on Tuesday. It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL) is generating about 1225. 92 million units of energy annually from eight generating stations with total installed capacity of 354.7 MW.
The government in order to address the concerns of power shortage is concentrating on small hydel projects and apart from Lakroh, there are two others that are under construction for capacity addition. The two — Ganol SHP ( 22.5 MW ) and Riangdo SHP (3MW) – along with Lakroh will take the total installed capacity to 381.70 MW.
