Tura woman rubbishes GSMC leader’s claims
SHILLONG: A woman from Bamonpara locality of Tura who was earlier accused by the Co-Chairman of the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) of allowing the illegal felling of a tree in her compound has rubbished the claims of the committee and informed that it was MePDCL employees who had trimmed the tree as its branches touched the electric wires. Earlier, GSMC Co-Chairman, Balkarin Marak had alleged that the tree was illegally being fell on the orders of Elsa B Sangma without any proper authorization from the concerned authorities. Sangma while countering the allegation hit out at GSMC saying the same was made without any basis. “The MEPDCL employees keep regular checking of the electric lines as there was an incident during 2010 of the frequent spark from nearby transformer which caught my house thus completely destroying my old house,” Sangma said and added that facts should have been first verified.

NCC officials interact with Don Bosco college students
TURA: Group Commandant of NCC, Brigadier P M Bali along with Commanding Officer of 2nd Meghalaya Battalion NCC, Colonel Daljit Singh, and Colonel Hemant Saroch, Commanding Officer 61 Meghalaya Girls’ NCC on Tuesday interacted with the students of Don Bosco College and other school students who attended the programme. The college community welcomed the NCC personnel in the college Amphitheatre. The reason behind the programme was to strengthen NCC activities in the five districts of Garo Hills. Speaking on the occasion, Brigadier P M Bali said that the Government fully supported the NCC programme in the state. He also mentioned that taking forward NCC activities in Garo Hills is very important as it helps students to get into the armed forces.

NE conclave in promotion of mother tongue
Shillong: National Council for Promotion of Sindhi Language, Ministry of HRD, New Delhi had organised the 1st North East India conclave on role of youth in promotion of mother tongue(Sindhi) at Shri Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture, Shillong. It is in collaboration with the United Sindhi Association ofShillong,Assam Sindhi Panchayat, Guwahati,Sindhi Council of India, Shillong&Guwahati chapter. The primary goal of this conclave was to bring together professionals of the National Council for Promotion of Sindhi Language as well as friends and partners from Shillong and Guwahati in an open dialogue under one roof to discuss the issues faced by linguistic minority community in promotion and communication in Mother Tongue.

Appeal to help students
SHILLONG: SPARK, a local NGO working with under-privileged children, has appealed to citizens to extend help to sustain the organisation’s new session beginning this month. The organisation’s founder member Shima Modak said those who are willing to help can offer cash, stationeries, clothes or shoes. “We are facing acute financial crisis and in need of help. Concerned citizens can go to our Facebook where we have uploaded our appeal. We have mentioned our requirements there,” she added.
SPARK provides education to the street children in the city and underprivileged children on the outskirts.

College students raise demands
TURA: The Williamnagar Government College Students’ Union (WGCSU) has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday seeking infrastructural development of the college among others. The union sought construction of a permanent boundary wall around the campus to prevent theft and littering by the public. The union also sought the appointment of a driver for the college bus and Principal and Vice Principal for the Higher Secondary level. It also demanded construction of more teachers’ quarters as well as hostel facilities for both boys and girls.

Health screening camp held
Shillong: A health screening camp for families of Assam Rifles was organised on Tuesday at Assam Rifles Multi-speciality Hospital. The camp was inauguarted by Sangeeta Sangwan, President ARWWA. As part of the inauguration, a lecture on ‘Cancer Among Women’ was delivered by Brig VS Sayed, Brig (Med), 101 Area Shillong. A skit on importance of screening and timely follow up of cancer among women was also performed. All the families of AR in Shillong were screened for anaemia, blood sugar, hypertension, breast self-examination, gall stones by USG. A total of 300 families attended the function.
