SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) will sit next week to decide on the long pending issue of selecting a common candidate from both Shillong and Tura seat to take on the Congress in the next Lok Sabha election.

Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of a programme, Deputy Chief Minister and NPP leader, Prestone Tynsong said that there is still time to deliberate on the matter  and the alliance would definitely sit next week and decide on the matter.

It may be mentioned that the UDP, a key ally in the Government has already gone ahead by announcing Jemino Mawthoh as the common candidate while BJP has already decided to go solo in the elections.

The HSPDP too have proposed the name of its MLA, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar as its common candidate.

However, Tynsong said that all the issues pertaining to common candidate be it the UDP’s stand on common candidate and BJP’s decision to contest the election solo will be discussed and deliberated in the meeting

When asked if the NPP would contest all the 25 seats in the North East in the polls, he said that the NPP intended to contests all the seats but they would have to gauge the ground reality

Reacting to the claims of Congress leader, Zenith Sangma that NPP days were numbered in Meghalaya, Tynsong said that Zenith Sangma was not a prophet and such statements were being made out of frustration.

He also criticized the Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma saying the work of the Opposition leader was to criticize the Government while the people in the state know what the Government is doing for the state.
