Workers to protest against MeECL today

SHILLONG: The casual or contractual employees of MeECL, under the banner of MeECL Progressive Workers’ Union (MPWU), will hold a one-day sit-in demonstration at the Additional Secretariat parking lot in the city on Tuesday to protest against the management’s reluctance to negotiate with the union.
The MPWU had earlier submitted two letters to the management in an effort to start negotiations to address the problems faced by them.
The workers had earlier demanded that MeECL should implement rules and policies for regularisation of casual or contractual employees and implement the order of the Supreme Court regarding equal pay for equal work. A demand was also put forth to the management to stop outsourcing workers and to recognize the MPWU as a union.
An agreement between the union and the MeECL was also signed in August last year concerning benefits for casual or contractual employees but the management has so far failed to honour the agreement.
