NGT panel seeks report on coal truck mishap

SHILLONG: The NGT panel headed by B P Katoki has sought a report from the state government on the death of four persons after a coal-laden truck overturned in East Jaintia Hills district.
An official source said on Sunday that Katoki sought the report since the incident on March 11 at 3 Kilo in Sutnga area under Khliehriat police station was related to illegal transportation of coal.
The government, based on the Supreme Court order, had banned all sorts of transportation of coal.
The mishap took place when the truck, which was loaded with around 10 metric tonnes (MT) of coal, was on its way to another coal depot to load more for transportation either to cement plants or outside the state.
As per official norm, a truck can carry only 9 MT of coal.
The deceased have been identified as Umesh Raut (45), Thulasi Raut (46), Nanda Kishor Mahato (47) and Anil Shah (38). They were from Bihar.
The injured were Nemen Mahato (42), Bhuti Miyan (39), Daroga Mukhia (35) and Atehelal Giri (52), also residents of Bihar.
