SHILLONG: Ahead of Lok Sabha polls, Congress legislator and Opposition Chief Whip PT Sawkmie has criticized BJP’s association with the MDA partners like NPP and UDP.
Besides the NPP and the UDP, the MDA has the support of BJP, HSPDP, PDF and independents.
Speaking at a meeting at his office in Mawlai Nongpdeng on Saturday, he said, “If the BJP comes to power, the people of the state will face difficulties. Besides, the party is also pushing for the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill to become a law.”
Regional parties also came in for criticism with Sawkmie asserting that UDP will work together with BJP and NPP if it wins.
The UDP has nominated former legislator Jemino Mawthoh as the common candidate for the MDA from Shillong Lok Sabha seat while NPP has fielded former Union minister Agatha Sangma for the Tura seat. BJP, however, will go solo in both the seats.
On the other hand, the Congress legislator sought the support of the people for party candidates Vincent Pala in Shillong and Mukul Sangma in Tura.
The Lok Sabha polls will be held in the state on April 11.
Pala will be contesting for the third time.
Meanwhile, new office bearers of the Mawlai Block Congress Committee were elected on Saturday with Batskhem Makdoh as president and Marbud Dkhar and Kit Sun as working presidents, besides others.
Wanseng Jyrwa is the president of the Mawlai Youth Congress Committee while Asterious Lyngdoh is the general secretary.
