Rahul Gandhi arrives in Imphal for poll campaign

GUWAHATI:  All India Congress Committee (AICC) President, Rahul Gandhi  arrived in Imphal on Tuesday evening as part of his election campaign for the Lok Sabha election.

He was accorded a warm welcome  by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) members and womenfolks of Ima Keithel  [women market].

Rahul Gandhi landed at Imphal International Airport at around 5pm in a special flight from Arunachal Pradesh. He was accompanied by Congress North East in-charge-Luizinho Faleiro during his visit.

Rahul was first welcomed by President of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee- Gaikhangam, Congress Legislature Party leader- Okram Ibobi and executive members of MPCC at the airport.

From the airport Rahul, accompanied by members of the Congress, went straight to Bir Tikendrajit Park and paid floral tributes to Bir Tikendrajit, the erstwhile King of Manipur who was hanged to death for waging war against the British during Anglo-Manipuri War in 1891.

He then went to Ima Keithel or Ema market, the all-women market where  many women were waiting  to welcome him.  The women put tilak to his forehead and garlanded him while welcoming the Congress chief to Manipur.

Rahul Gandhi who is on a two-day visit to Imphal, will address a public rally/election rally at Hapta Kangjeibung. Rahul will also attend a meeting with Youth Congress at the Auditorium of Manipur Film Development Society before the public rally.
