Eyes on borders ahead of polls

SHILLONG: The state’s borders with Bangladesh and Assam have been brought under strict vigil in view of the Lok Sabha elections on April 11.
Talking to media persons here on Tuesday, Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor informed that apart from the international border, police of both Assam and Meghalaya are on high alert along the inter-state boundary.
Meghalaya shares long borders with Bangladesh and Assam.
Kharkongor said that various directions have been issued to keep a close tab on the activities and political events along the international border and inter-state boundary with Assam.
According to Kharkongor, police of the districts lying along these borders are on high alert and the DCs and SPs are holding regular meetings and deliberating on issues.
He also informed that the BSF has seized Rs 20 lakh from West Khasi Hills and the amount has already been handed over to the Income Tax department. A committee headed by the DC of West Khasi Hills will ascertain whether the money was for non-political use.
Stating that law and order situation is under control and all steps are being taken to keep it that way, the CEO informed that 20 companies of the Central Armed Paramilitary Force or CAPF have already arrived out of which 11 are for Shillong parliamentary seat and 9 for Tura. More CAPF companies are expected to join in closer to the poll date.
The CAPF will carry out area domination exercises and maintain strict vigil especially at night.
It may be mentioned that there are 3,167 polling stations, out of which 2053 are under Shillong parliamentary seat and 1114 under Tura. There are over 700 polling stations considered vulnerable while 249 are critical and 68 are both critical and vulnerable.
